About the event

THE OBX WAY's 3rd Annual Bottle Hunt will honor Captain Richard Ethridge. As the first African American Keeper of a United States Life Saving Service Station, Etheridge and his all-black crew at the Pea Island Life Saving Station paved the way for generations of African American men and women in the United States Life Saving Service and the United States Coast Guard. Visit the National Park Service website to learn more about Etheridge's contributions to our nation's history.

This event is inspired by the Great Trails State "First Day Hikes" initiative, which encourages Carolinians to enjoy the outdoors on New Year's Day. Pea Island's unique natural, cultural, and historic landmarks are key educational sites for each bottle location.
